Defensive Driving Online - Is It Worth It?
Online defensive driving courses have become more and more popular over the years. Surprisingly, going to a classroom is still the most popular form of taking a driver education class. Of course, not all states permit online courses as a way to satisfy traffic school needs but even in the states that do, attending a the classroom is still the most popular way. This beckons the question, is it worth taking a defensive driving course online?
Surprisingly, in most states that have certified and approved online courses, the residents are simply not aware of it. In New York State, online defensive driving courses have been approved for the past 6 years but most residents have absolutely no idea they even exist. Why is that? For starters, many people take the course at their insurance office. The instructor is normally someone who works for the agency and is looking to supplement their income. God bless them. You can’t fault someone for making extra income in an honest fashion. The average profit for teaching a defensive driving class with 20 students is $700. That’s not bad for 6 hours of work. With that being said, do you think the insurance agents are going to inform people they can take the class online for half the price? Of course they aren’t. Why would they take food out of their own mouths? I know what some of you may be thinking. How could my agent not tell me? Would you send people over to your competition for a product that you offer?
Admittedly, an online course isn’t for everybody. If you work from home, you might want to get out of the house and have some human interaction. Maybe you hate computers, but if you do, you’re probably not reading this. Now if you don’t hate computers, and you are not deprived of human interaction, the question remains is an online defensive driving course worth it? The answer is an emphatic yes and below I will explain why.
Why should I take a defensive driving course online?
For starters taking an approved course online will grant you all of the same benefits of a classroom course. Please note that I said an approved course. The benefits vary from state to state. In some states, people will take the defensive driving course in order to get a ticket dismissed. In other states, you may get points removed from your license and at the same time get a generous discount on your car insurance. We are not going to get into all of the specifics of each state here; the point is the benefits are the same.
You may have noticed that I mentioned the online price being half that of a classroom. I wasn’t exaggerating. A typical defensive driving course costs anywhere from $50 to $75. The online course usually runs between $25 and $30. That’s right, you get all of the same benefits for half the price. So, if you’re looking to save money on your car insurance, we are assuming that you are cost conscious, and we don’t need to explain this further.
Last but certainly not least is the overall convenience of taking the class online. The online courses are available all day every day. That means you take the course when you want to. You also get to break the course into multiple session. Most of us simply don’t have the luxury of setting aside 6 hours to take a defensive driving class but with the online course you don’t need to. If you start the course, and something interrupts you just sign out and come back at another time. You can even sign in from your computer at work and take it on your lunch break. In most states, they allow you 30 days to complete the course.
So, is it worth taking the class online? I think so. Between the price, convenience, and benefits I certainly believe it is the best option but I might be a little bias.
